GIRL TALK: I CAN’T LISTEN TO UGLY RAPPERS

Should a rapper’s looks play a part in whether or not girls will listen their music?

Forgive me for being so aesthetically judgmental.

I mean, It’s not like a rapper’s looks has any connection to how or if you can relate to their music – because that would be really lame and shallow, right?

I looked through my I Pod and my most played rap tracks are all by rappers I find cute or relatively hot – Big Sean, Kid Cudi, Asap Rocky, Camron, Kendrick – the list goes on. At the very least, they have to have some sort of style.

 

Odd Future’s Earl Sweatshirt is pretty hard to look at. I can’t decide whether it’s his hairline, awkward looking mouth or tired sloth-like eyes that bother me the most, but his face is all I see whenever I try to listen to his music. And if I’m honest, it’s pretty off-putting.

 

I tried to listen to his new song Chum and apart from the fact that it’s a bunch of mumblerap, I just couldn’t stop thinking about his fucked up grill. This is probably going to tarnish my burgeoning career as an unbiased music journo, but I’m sure girls reading this can relate to my struggle.

 

It’s not just Earl, I can’t listen to Gucci Mane, Bushwick Bill or Ja Rule, either. Girls are visual creatures, which is why we all love Asap Rocky. Lets be honest, he’s not the greatest rapper alive, but fuck me is he a cutey. There are some exceptions to the rule of course — Rick Ross being one of them — but on the whole, butus rappers get no play around here. When we lie on our beds with our eyes closed, we listen to your rap-tales of selling drugs, LA gang culture and shopping for designer clothes – we want to imagine ourselves holding your hand, doing all those things as a cute rap-celeb couple. Which is why our minds, ears and ovaries automatically tune out when we don’t find you visually appealing.  I mean, even 2 Chainz has something going for him in the style and dare I say it ‘swag’ department.

Girls, am I alone here? How do you guys feel about listening to ugly rappers?
